Kota Bharu is located on Peninsular Malaysia's east coast and is well known for being the gateway to the Perhentian Islands. Stay a little longer than a transit through, since Kota Bharu is one of the country's most typically Malay cities. This is a conservative area, but it's a fascinating one since you'll experience a side of Malaysia that many of the east coast places have forgotten about. Visit the local museums and mosques, as well as the royal residences' ornate architecture.
