What triggers a sore throat?

 A viral infection, such as a cold or the flu, is the most common cause of pharyngitis, or sore throat. A virus-caused sore throat goes away on its own. Strep throat, also known as a streptococcal infection, is a type of bacterial sore throat that requires antibiotic treatment to avoid complications.
