Belgrade's strategic location at the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers has seen it fought over, conquered, and destroyed numerous times throughout history.
The city, which was once ruled by both the Ottomans and the Hapsburgs and subsequently became the capital of Yugoslavia, has a diverse range of architectural styles and historical sites. There are many lovely churches to see in addition to the enormous and spectacular fortress, with the colossal Temple of Saint Sava being the most impressive of them all. There are a number of lovely parks strewn about town for you to relax and unwind in, while the river banks are ideal for tranquil strolling.
Belgrade is rightfully regarded as Southeastern Europe's party capital, with a vibrant cafe culture and a plethora of nightclubs to choose from. Overall, the capital of modern-day Serbia is definitely worth a visit.
